Chilly, dark fall mornings make it tempting to stay under the covers. A quick stretch routine together is a fun way to wake up bodies and brains before school and work, and it only takes 10 minutes in the living room. No equipment needed, and every move is kid-friendly, so the whole family can join in, from preschoolers to grandparents.

The Routine (about 1 minute per move)

  1. Balloon Breaths (1 minute): Sit cross-legged and tall. Breathe in slowly through your nose for 4 counts, filling your belly like a balloon, then breathe out through your mouth for 4 counts. Repeat 6 times.
Kid tip: Have little ones rest a stuffed animal on their belly and watch it ride up and down.
  2. Neck & Shoulder Rolls (1 minute): Still seated, gently tip one ear toward your shoulder, then the other, 3 times each side. Then roll your shoulders backward 10 times and forward 10 times.
Kid tip: Pretend to draw slow circles in the air with your nose.
  3. Tall Tree Reach (1 minute): Stand with feet hip-width apart. Reach both arms overhead, rise up onto your toes, then lower down. Do 5 reaches, then lean gently to the right and left, 5 times each side.
Kid tip: Be a tall tree swaying in the fall wind, and let your "leaves" (fingers) wiggle.
  4. Cat-Cow (1 minute): Come onto hands and knees. Round your back up toward the ceiling (cat), then slowly let your belly drop and look up (cow). Move with your breath for 8 slow rounds.
Kid tip: Add a soft "meow" and "moo" on each one.
  5. Child's Pose (1 minute): From hands and knees, sit your hips back toward your heels, walk your hands forward and rest your forehead on the mat. Breathe slowly for 5 to 6 breaths.
Kid tip: Curl up like a turtle tucked into its shell.
  6. Butterfly Stretch (1 minute): Sit and bring the soles of your feet together, letting your knees fall out to the sides. Hold your feet, sit tall and gently flutter your knees for 30 seconds, then lean forward slightly and hold for 30 seconds.
Kid tip: Flap your butterfly wings slow, then fast, then slow again.
  7. Leaf Pick-Up (Seated Toe Reach) (1 minute): Sit with legs out straight in front of you, knees soft or bent as much as needed. Reach toward your toes and hold 20 seconds, sit up, then repeat once more.
Kid tip: Pretend you're reaching to pick up a pretty fall leaf from your toes.
  8. Bear Walk & Down Dog (1 minute): Press into hands and feet with hips high (down dog) and "pedal" your heels for 20 seconds. Then bear-walk on hands and feet across the room and back.
Kid tip: Grown-ups can stay in down dog while the kids bear-walk around them.
  9. Leaf Pile Jumps (1 minute): March in place for 30 seconds, lifting your knees high. Then do 10 small, soft hops forward and back, as if jumping into a pile of leaves. Low-impact option: keep marching.
Kid tip: Shout "crunch!" every time you land.
  10. Star Pose & Big Hug (1 minute): Stand with feet wide and arms stretched out like a star. Take 3 slow, deep breaths, then wrap your arms around yourself in a big hug. Finish with a family hug!
Kid tip: Each person shares one thing they're looking forward to today.

Tips for Making It Stick

  • Do it at the same time each morning, like right after getting dressed or before breakfast, so it becomes a habit.
  • Let a different family member be the leader each day and call out the moves.
  • Play a favorite upbeat song or two; most songs run about 3 to 4 minutes.
  • No mats? A rug, towel or blanket works just fine, and pajamas are welcome.
  • Open the curtains first. Morning light plus movement is a great way to wake up on a dark fall morning.

A Quick Safety Note

Move gently and slowly. Stretch only to a comfortable, mild pull, never to pain, and don't bounce. Keep breathing throughout, and skip or modify any move that doesn't feel right. If you or your child has an injury, joint or back concerns, is pregnant, or has any health concerns, check with your doctor before starting a new exercise routine.

Ten minutes of moving together is a gift for the whole family. Have fun with it, laugh a little, and start your day stretched, awake and connected. 🍂🌿
